Bowel Ultrasound
Bowel ultrasound is a fast, safe, dynamic, cost-effective imaging tool which finely depicts the bowel wall structure, inflammation, and complications in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and infections
Key Advantages
- Fast and dynamic imaging
- No ionizing radiation and hence can be safely repeated multiple times
- No contrast administration required
- Cost-effective
Ultrasound can be used in screening patients with suspected bowel pathology at initial presentation and detect bowel lesions. Scopy/ CT/MRI is then used for overall lesion mapping.
Patients with IBD require a long term follow up with known flare up and remissions. Ultrasound is an excellent modality and now has a pivotal role in frequent monitoring of these patients who require long term follow up.
This is mainly because Bowel ultrasound depicts key features of IBD. The ultrasound findings correlate well with endoscopic disease activity, enabling clinicians to assess and monitor inflammation severity and treatment response.
Trans-perineal ultrasound further aids in evaluating perianal complications, such as fistulas or abscesses, common in Crohn's disease.
